Course Description for Freshman English Courses
I. Course Introduction
The Freshman English course is divided into:
- Regular classes (2 hours per week)
- Self-study practice (assigned by the instructor of each class)
The Freshman English (I) course is offered in the first (fall) semester, and the Freshman English (II) course is offered in the second (spring) semester, each carrying two credits.
Since the 97th academic year (2008/2009), all incoming freshmen have been required to take the English Placement Test. Students are then placed into four levels according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages): B1, B, A2, and A1.
- Students placed in B1 focus on developing practical English skills.
- Students placed in B and A2 focus on strengthening their English proficiency for language tests.
- Students placed in A1 receive foundation courses in English.
Starting from the 111th academic year (2022/2023), the levels were adjusted to three: B1, B, and A2 (ranked from higher to lower proficiency).
The courses adopt a unified syllabus and teaching materials. Starting from the 114th academic year (2025/2026), the textbook American English File will be used: Level 3 for Level B1 classes, Level 2 for Level B classes, and Level 1 for Level A2 classes. Textbooks are available at Caves Bookstore on campus.
Students are grouped according to their proficiency level, with course materials and learning activities designed accordingly. In addition, weekly self-study practices are arranged to maximize learning effectiveness. (Note: From the 112th academic year (2023/2024), the “English Self-Study” course has been discontinued.)
II. Placement and Class Assignment
- Freshman English classes are assigned strictly based on the placement test results. Requests for downgrading are not permitted. Students with excellent English performance may apply for upgrading to a higher-level class by submitting:
(1) A consent form from their current instructor, and
(2) Proof of English proficiency.
Applications may be submitted to the Foreign Language Center (FLC) from winter break until the end of Week 1 of the second semester. Application forms are available for viewing and download on the FLTC website. - Since the 101th academic year (2012/2013), Freshman English courses at all levels have been standardized. Instructors must follow the unified syllabus, teaching objectives, and teaching activities to complete the course schedule. Beginning in the 111th academic year (2022/2023), the midterm assessment is conducted in the form of a project (presented either in written or oral form), while the final exam is administered online.
- Regular students cannot enroll in Freshman English courses designated for student-athletes.
- Students in the Continuing Education Program in Business Management or for student-athletes who wish to take the regular Freshman English course must first take an English placement test to qualify for enrollment.
